Earth Day a Bogus “Hippy Holiday?”

by dawnmarrs on April 22, 2010

Earth DayYa I know… I was offended when I read it too, but still the headline exists (used to exist anyway – was removed at some point) and is getting at least some mileage (probably in large part due to people like myself who can’t stand to leave it alone).

Jeff Crourere, host of a Louisiana-based program Ringside Politics, surmises that Earth Day is a “bogus celebration of the environment and green movement” promoted by the Liberal mainstream media in the “hope that Americans will feel guilty” about their energy usage and carbon footprint. He also explains that “it is the perfect way for hippies of the 1960’s to fit into to today’s world.”

WOW, talk about missing the point all together.

I understand that political writers sometimes like to create a buzz by using headlines like this, but come on. Do I think the government can leverage a day like Earth Day to bring awareness to their agenda? Sure, government, both Liberal and Conservative, will use anything they can find to get their point across – National observances are not off limits.

But for a political spin-doctor to try to turn a positive movement into something we should feel ashamed of? Shame on him.

To be completely honest, I’m happy to see the government forking out cash for a campaign that benefits more than just their public opinion polls. There is absolutely no harm that can come from the message “Reuse, Reduce, Recycle,” or from the idea that conservation of our precious resources is a good thing.

When I see groups of school children out planting trees, or my entire home town mobilizing for an Earth Day “clean-up,” I know for sure that there’s more to it than just political rhetoric and propaganda. It’s about a global community concerned with the preservation of the planet we call home.

In honor of that I’ve included a link to something I think should actually be getting mileage…

50 Green Tips for Earth Day and Beyond by Kathleen J. King.
Happy Earth Day everyone!

Earth Day, though it may have “good intentions” by those who just want to save a tree or two, is not what most people actually think it is. There is a far Left fringe to the movement, which has taken over the environmental movement all together, trying to get people to fall for the old lines that we need to save our Earth or we are all going to DIE!!! That is just not true. Real science, which I have had the pleasure of studying for many years, shows time and again that after all we have done in the way of Industrialization has not doomed the Earth for a terrible end.

If people want to go around and pick up a soda can or two, plant a tree, or do whatever else makes themselves all fuzzy inside…let them to do it! But when there are so many flat out LIES about the environment out there, people like me start to see Earth Day as a propaganda tool used by some to push an agenda, not a day to clean up the Earth.

This is more political than I believe you have given credit. All we have to do is look at the Congress in the United States and see that to be the truth. They use stats that have been proved wrong to move an agenda for a more “cleaner earth”. But in reality their real goal is to push legislation that will not only hurt the every day American, and will take its toll on the economy as well.

Hi Shawn,
Thank you for your thoughtful comment.

I agree that conservation of the planet is a political issue, but I'm discussing it in more fundamental terms of conserving our planet and resources. Left and right wing aside, I think we can all agree that pollution and waste are bad for the environment (not to mention our health), and that any movement toward reducing that impact is a good thing – even if it's something as “fuzzy” as picking up a soda can or two.

I am not a scientist, nor am I an environmental activist, and so I can't speak to whether the earth is doomed to meet it's end via human mistreatment. But what I do know is that garbage and toxins in our lakes, rivers and oceans is bad – bad for plant life, wild life and bad for US, and that if we don't stop or at least slow down our bad practices, the situation will continue to get worse.

Politicians will fight their political battles using whatever propaganda and tactics are available – that goes for both sides. But when it comes to looking after the environment, we all need to do our part, regardless of our political affiliations.

Thanks again… I always appreciate good conversation :)

You are very right on. Both sides of the political spectrum play politics with everything. It would be weird if they did not, I would think they were acting like civil human beings!

Very nice blog. Sometimes I come off as rough in blogs and get banned by many of them. Nice to see some people out there still like some conversation.

Take care and have a great week.
