The Dangers of Home-Based Business

by dawnmarrs on May 14, 2010

tropical backyardIt’s a beautiful Friday afternoon and I was thinking about taking a “vacation day.” To me a vacation day means not thinking about my business, not looking at my website, and definitely not writing a blog post.

My sweetie decided that we would spend the weekend at his parent’s place off the central coast of California. Their backyard is like something out of a resort brochure… kidney shaped pool, several well-placed lounge and dining areas, immaculate landscaping and even a play structure for the kids. Great place to take a vacation day if I was going to do it.

But as you can see, even as  I sit in this backyard paradise, here I am blabbing away, checking on my business, roaming around my website and even writing a blog post. I’ve come to realize this is one of the dangers of loving what you do for a living – you don’t want or need a break from it, so it’s easy to blur the lines of your work/life balance. If this is the stress that comes with working from home, then I’ll gladly take it.

I’m going to keep this short because I have three awesome kids begging me to get in the pool with them, a sweet heart in desperate need of suntan lotion on his back and a little doggie who wants to play fetch. Life can’t get any better than this – if it does, I’ll know I’ve died and gone to heaven.

I’m not posting this to brag about how awesome my life is, or to give you the impression that I don’t “work,” because I definitely do. But what I do want to impress upon you, is that life can be whatever you make of it.

Don’t think for a second it was easy for me to hand in my resignation to my corporate job, and say goodbye to my guaranteed pay check and government benefits – because it wasn’t. It was one of the most difficult, downright scary decisions I’ve ever made. But for me, just the glimmer of hope that I could a life completely of my choosing, devoid of deadlines and stressed out managers was enough to spark the fire.

My point is this; if you’re not absolutely content with your life – how you make your living, and how you spend your time – take a minute now to acknowledge that the decision to change it is completely within your control.

Have an incredible weekend everyone!

**AFTERTHOUGHT: I am in no way implying than anyone should quit their job if they don’t have adequate means to support themselves and manage their responsibilities – I did some pretty creative reworking of finances to make the move, and I also had a decent down-line built in my network marketing organization.  Make the decision to start the business part-time first, then consider bigger changes when your income allows.
